Since 1988, the VICP has received tens of thousands of petitions. Key metrics include:

• Total petitions filed: Approximately 9,000+ petitions filed since inception
• Compensation awarded: Approximately 6,000+ petitions have received compensation
• Total compensation paid: Over $4 billion in compensation
• Attorney fees: Additional millions paid in legal fees

Filing rates have varied over time:

• Compensation does not prove a vaccine caused an injury — only that a covered injury occurred within the specified time frame
• The number of claims filed is not the same as the number of actual injuries
• Many claims are denied each year
• Most vaccines result in very few compensated claims relative to doses administered
